LaunchPad staff and participants wish you and yours a very Happy New Year!
2018 was an exciting year for all who have been involved in LaunchPad! You may have seen participants and staff working hard at one of our pop-up booths, Christmas Show Events or even at the Halifax Seaport Market.
There have been lots of memorable moments to reflect upon over the last year. Check out some of our favorites below:
November was a busy month for LaunchPad participants! You might have seen them at one of the many Christmas Craft Shows in Halifax or at the Halifax Seaport Market selling jewelry from Autism Nova Scotia's social enterprise - The Pearl. This hands on experience is more than an opportunity to sample job tasks in a retail setting. Work experience with The Pearl provides a valuable insight into the expectations of the workplace in a supportive environment.
Participants learn the importance of arriving to work on time, which can also mean learning how to ride the bus! The work experience provides an opportunity to learn the importance of delivering exceptional customer service, how to multi-task and how to work as part of a team. LaunchPad participants gets hands-on practice in how to handle cash, write receipts, process credit/debit payments and maintain the sales booth with merchandise.
In addition to gaining pre-employment skills in the classroom and with The Pearl, LaunchPad participants recently completed their Emergency First Aid and CPR training. Shannon from St. John Ambulance delivered a two day training for participants and staff.
Shannon covered a lot of topics, some of which included how to apply bandages, put casualties into the recovery position, and administer CPR. Be sure to watch the video below of LaunchPad Participants and staff learning how to administer CPR - all to the song of "Up Town Funk You Up!"
Our current cohort of LaunchPad started in late October. It's been a busy autumn so far, with a lot of learning and fun!
You might have seen LaunchPad in their work experience selling jewellery with The Pearl at the Christmas at the Forum, Best of Local event or the Halifax Seaport Market. Participants have been learning the importance of delivering exceptional customer service, how to handle cash, maintain a sales booth and complete sales transactions.
Shauna and Hannah also just completed an interview with CTV's Kelly Linehan! You can watch the interview here -> CTV Interview with LaunchPad and The Pearl
During the classroom component we have been busy learning about building strong resumes and cover letters and covering how to job search! It's been a busy but fun month!
